L’estate è appena iniziata qui in Finlandia quindi sto ascoltando musica semplice e calorosa come The Doors, Turbonegro, Dodheimsgård e The Prodigy!

A te concludere come meglio credi…

Grazie per l’intervista Cristina! Fuck the rest, Satan is best!

Hi Aleister and welcome to the blackmetalistkrieg webzine. Introduce King Satan: when was the band born and why you have created this project? Is it a solo project or a full band?

Hello Cristina! King Satan was born in 2015 first as a solo project to serve my creatively destructive nature and its urge to expand the channels of self-expression into some sort of concept that would not be restrictive in anyway but lenient into everything (Nothing is true and everything is permitted!). Thus, King Satan was born! Project’s start was very experimental by its nature and therefore I did not have any plans for the band in the beginning, so I was genuinely surprised about the hype it started gathering after the release of first singles and demo EP which led into inquiries to perform live as well. This was when I started recruiting full line-up, and the band developed slowly into full band with permanent line-up!

How was the creative process of the first album? Did you follow a specific method or just your instinct?

This is hard question to answer exhaustively, as I am kind of still processing what really happened! Making process of “King Fucking Satan” took almost two years, during which I ended up destroying both, my physical (internal organs) and mental health (psychosis) for good amount of percent and even ended up being semi-homeless for a while, hah! But I am glad I could sleep in the studio’s coach which allowed me to make the album and bend the creative process into its extreme climax. I experimented with several methods in different songs, but the main method I think was to follow my instinct and intuition. I stripped my ego (conception of Self, not the very Self) and let everything that I had gathered in my life so far into the chambers of my (sub)consciousness flow free and take over my physical existence, all while trying to capture it into recording devices. Hard to say whether this (the creative process) caused my life’s turning completely upside down and almost costing my life/welfare or did the kathartic metamorphosis that I was going through cause the creative process to be what it was like? I did not only gave birth of King Fucking Satan, but also to myself in some sort of re-incarnated, reborn way – which makes the album very personal for me due its connection to the most difficult time of my life I was going through and without Kate Boss and Magister Demaniac the album would’ve never saw the light of a day (It is time to wake up and use your eyes, for the very first time!) But, maybe next album will tell!

How was your passion for industrial born? Is there any group that has influenced you or that you love in particular?

The very nature of industrial’s legacy as a genre lies on the unconventional and crazy experimentalism to emphasis your message and agenda, so it was like looking the personal analysis of myself while introducing myself into (electro-)industrial. From industrial, maybe Laibach, Skinny Puppy, Rammstein has been most influential for me I guess, however the biggest influences for King Satan (musically) comes actually from electro-industrial and aggrotech area, from bands like Suicide Commando and Hocico and not industrial at all but probably the biggest influence for me when it comes to King Satan is and has been The Prodigy. King Satan’s genre has been up to debate by listeners and medias, because we are not pure metal, we are not pure industrial as we have lots of hard rock and electro (aggrotech, EBM and even dance punk elements in our music). This said, the other major musical influences comes from outside of electro-industrial which is the source of creativity when it comes to King Satan’s creative process. The biggest influences for King Satan aren’t musical per se!

Did the full length satisfied you? Which feedback did you get?

It became MUCH better than I expected, artistically speaking and when it comes to the feedback, but I would not still say satisfied ‘cos I became even more hungrier to take this much, much further! And the feedback! It was overwhelming! Critics and people either loved it or hated it, no in-betweens or anything mild! And our fanatics (that’s right, we have no fans, we have fanatics! As we are fanatics too!) taking tattoos of us, making fan art and following us from city to city to see our shows – which is something that I cannot express with words how fucking great and amazing is that! With this amazing support and with lots of threats and hate mail we get as well, it is more than I could’ve ever hoped for, as this is kind of artist’s dream – to really make an impact! Albums first pressing of CD’s was sold out only in few months which was also quite amazing on this day and age of digital downloading and streaming.

Tell us about the King Satan concept, does it concern crowleyan satanism? I think there is also a certain amount of irony in your texts and in your image. Don’t you think so?

King Satan’s concept do not precisely promote any certain ideology or movement exclusively as King Satan is the concept, ideology and movement we DO promote exclusively! However we want to promote things that are important to us or has influenced us so ones with accurate eyes and ears can spot things from there and there for sure. Crowleyan Satanism? Although Crowley never regarded himself as Satanist, I think he was indeed the true Satanist in spirit when you are judging his actions! But yeah, Aleister Crowley has the special place in King Satan’s concept as one of the biggest influences and inspirations. I would say that you get good estimate of what King Satan’s concept is philosophically speaking if you check out Aleister Crowley/Friedrich Nietzsche/Carl Gustav Jung’s books but of course there are lots of other influences and sources of inspiration for King Satan’s lyrical and thematical side that like reality itself is not only hard but impossible to put into a box or frames. First and foremost King Satan is about Satan, the archetype of the Devil in general in all of its embodiments and manifestations – Satanism is merely just one interpretation of that and Satanism is so wide and large concept, mainly associated with Anton LaVey’s Church Of Satan so even I have huge respect towards them, I do not see myself as LaVeyn Satanist no more than I would see myself as a traditional Satanist either because of certain metaphysical theoretical differences that are way too boring to discuss in interviews. I am more into Satanicism! (Satanic mysticism / Satanism + Mysticism) and therefore King Satan as well. As for other themes, Irony, some amount yes in the sense of over-the-top expression and there’s black comedy, dark humour and satire for sure! These too in the sense of Mihail Bulgakov, Chuck Palahniuk and Hunter S. Thompson – as all the jokes are on the expense of serious things. Clowning is serious business.

Your first European tour just ended. Are you satisfied with this experience? Is there any particular anectode that you would like to tell me?

Yes, very! Some of the best shows of ours so far and actually one of the worst could fit into these 17 days on the road in 10 countries! Lots of incredible moments and very passionate people, and like said – what would rock’n’roll be without some trouble, mischief and danger that in the big picture we could triumph and make it all worth & while. The purpose of the tour was indeed to promote our debut and us for the mainland Europe, so the seed is now planted for the future endeavours of ours as we got lots of new contacts, listeners, fanatics and even friends during the journey and several “call-backs” which first of them will happen in festival form in 2019 hopefully (we are negotiating as we speak). It was so surreal to play from some weekday shows for dozen people all the way to the almost full houses but no matter of venue or city, all the audiences were awesome – beyond expectations actually! Zurich’s show was basically only one that left bad feeling to the mouth, as there were no sound engineer in the house and our guitarist Dalai worked as sound engineer while he played (yes, you read right!) and PA system broke couple of times during our show, so it was more the most expensive band practice instead of live show hahahahah! Owner was a great guy though! But even there, merchandise sold and we had new drinking buddies from the audience so hail to them!

I went to see you concert in Milan, I saw a great alchemy between the band’s members and a powerful energy. What are your memories of this gig?

Nothing but good memories from Milan! Audience taught me to speak all necessary things in Italian (Porco dio!) during the show and of course all the free booze I was offered by you! I remember it was cozy, intimate venue and very intense night due to smaller club’s possibility to interact with the audience very well! Monday show meant not so many people compared to weekends or end of the week shows, but quality over quantity was really the case with this night alike with couple of other shows of the tour – as audience was so receptive and passionate that could beat its size by double! We were invited to play again there, so let’s hope we can return there in 2019!

You are also the singer of Saturnian Mist who plays black metal. What’s the kind of music that let you to express yourself the most? What are the limits of the black metal and of the industrial music?

Yes, that is correct! Well, I do only music that allows me express myself the way I want, so I cannot compare really which lets me do it better as they are sort of continuum, different angles of my self-expression. I don’t give a shit about genres (or any kind structures, definitions or restrictions) really but more of the content, spirit and feeling, as both of my bands when it comes to Saturnian Mist and King Satan are very heretic and unorthodox representatives of each respective genres, taking lots of influences and inspiration outside of genres tied to the band’s names. I concentrate to the content (the essence), not the form which I believe to be born almost spontaneously when channeling the content (the essence, the idea). This said, I don’t know or care about the limits when it comes to the making and producing music – fuck the rest Satan is best!

What are you planning for King Satan? Are you working on the next album?

I’d like to overthrow current status quo of spirituality when it comes to the modern world and replace it with something better. But at this moment, this is kind of too megalomaniac and probably not even the business of musicians which we are in the end hahaha! We just finished the aforementioned first European tour and also a tour in our native Finland, so after so many shows we are taking little break when it comes to the playing of shows and we are about to enter into studio in Summer 2018 to start the recordings of our second album and in Autumn we will have some more shows to play. Our future is now depending on the process of making the second album, but after that’s out we will surely tour again!

How is your job with Saturnal Records?

Me and my associates sold the company and it’s subsidiaries (excluding Blackvox Studio which stays with me) to new owner and management in the end of 2017 and the whole operation moved therefore into Helsinki, Finland. But yes, I was a co-founder and co-owner of the label, and I was working at the time as label manager and chairman of the board which was quite fun for the few years I was in the charge, but when we were offered a good deal from good buyer we knew would honor the thing we started and even could take it to the next level – the buyout deal was made and torch was passed to new reign. I can only speak on my behalf, but the sort of unexpected hype of King Satan started taking way too much time from me together with so many other projects and as Saturnal Records had grown into more than a full-time job with international distribution and record shop side I did not actually have to think twice of choosing the next step for me, as I have always been first and foremost an artist-musician/producer instead of businessman as which I was only lucky I guess, hahah! But that allowed Saturnal Records grow relatively big in relatively short time on my watch. I was honored that Rex (new manager) wanted me to continue in the company in some form, so I am still working as A&R rep. which allows me to concentrate on making music, videos and develop my artistic expression with full focus.

Is King Satan part of a specific music scene?

Probably, but I think it is always better to answer these kind of questions with radical statements like FUCK THE WORLD instead of something that emphasis that you are part of something bigger than you while at the same time trying to imply that you are indeed very unique snowflake despite of this and that you could live without it as well with same results. The need to belong is strong with gregarious animals like humans tend to be! In the end it doesn’t really matter, just enjoy the ride!

What are your recent listenings? Is there any band you would like to recommend?

Summer just started here in Finland, so I’ve been listening more of easy listening style and warm music like The Doors, Turbonegro, Dodheimsgård and The Prodigy! While on touring I also re-discovered my love for Tom Waits, but I need to get those on vinyl since it is not really a car music (yes, my car is my CD player, hail Volvo!). If you are looking for new industrial bands, this fucking crazy band Geisterwald supported us while we played on tour in Switzerland’s Geneve, they were amazing!

One last question: what happened to Anxiety band?

Well, basically, it became or better yet, transformed into Saturnian Mist during it’s debut album recordings. The first demo of Saturnian Mist was supposed to be the debut album of Anxiety, but many things led into the forming of new band so I killed Anxiety and founded Saturnian Mist with fra. Chaoswind using best parts of new Anxiety that did not feel like Anxiety anymore for new shape of things that became Saturnian Mist.

The interview ends here! Feel free to say what do you want…

Thank you for interview Cristina! FUCK THE REST SATAN IS BEST!
